Helpful information about graphic design for printing & internet use
Design layouts:
A good rule of thumb in graphic design is to keep it simple.
Avoid cluttered layouts, use clear, concise communication from concept ideas to building your final layout.
Consider using a limited color palette. Maintain consistency in design elements throughout your layouts
such as fonts, spacing, and imagery.
Some principles of design are: Emphasis, Balance, Alignment, Contrast, Proportion and White Space.
Graphic designers need as much of this information as they can get before starting your project(s).
Things like what size will your project be, what colors you have in mind, what font styles you might like, if you are providing
digital images or hard copy, if you are providing text content and if you have a computer, tablet or phone with email capability.
When communicating with a designer for your project(s), be clear in what you want to end up with and follow the simple guidelines of printing vs internet projects available today. This will greatly help both parties with a successful outcome.
Not all graphic designers have both PC windows and Apple Mac computers. Files from WORD or Publisher or even Canva
usually need to be converted or rebuilt in a professional design software like adobe: indesign, illustrator or quark express
to be used in commercial process printing.
Computer standard file formats are pdf, eps, jpg, png and others. Some of these are image formats contain pixels.
The more pixels per inch in an image the better the quality of the image.
Other formats are vector art which have no pixels and can be enlarged to any size without loss of quality.
We use both to achieve a successful print or internet project.
Design color formats:
There are only two used on computers for commercial printing. RGB and CMYK.
RGB is seen in millions of colors generated by your computer screen, tablet or mobile phones.
Those colors are illuminated from light behind the digital devices and are not formatted for printing.
Digital Camera's and cell phones create RGB images. These need to be converted to cmyk format for commercial printing.
RGB images are fine for use on the internet like websites, online marketing, video or animations.
CMYK consists of 4 ink colors used in standard commercial printing. *Cyan, *Magenta, *Yellow and *Black.
Those 4 colors in combinations or patterns of dots are what make up a printed image.
When designing projects for printing like brochures, posters, banners, business cards etc. the graphic designer will use the cmyk format for the layout of such projects.
